As the stadium emptied on Sept. 16 following a loss to St. Laurence, St. Rita kicker Gavin Mottl picked up a ball and a tee and marched out onto the field.

The sophomore had just missed a 44-yard field goal that would have tied the game as time expired. The kick missed to the right, but Mottl wasn’t going anywhere after the game.

He wanted to get things right, and did he ever.

Just a week later, Mottl drilled a game-winning 34-yard field goal to help St. Rita take down rival Mt. Carmel at Gately Stadium in a Chicago Catholic League-Blue showdown.

“That’s one of the reasons I knew he was going to hit the kick against Mt. Carmel,” St. Rita Coach Todd Kuska said. “After the St. Laurence game, Gavin stayed out here on the field for probably an hour. He said he wanted to make sure that he would make the next kick.”
