St. Rita of Cascia High School bestows the “Mustang of the Month” award every month during the academic year to notable students from each class. Faculty and staff nominate students based on the student’s overall achievements and involvement at the school. The award winners are then selected from those nominated by an award committee. The following students were selected the January 2010 Mustangs of the Month:
Freshman Jake LePretre (St. Cajetan): So far during Jake’s freshman year he was a member of St. Rita’s golf team and is currently participating in indoor track. In the spring he is looking forward to joining Lacrosse. Jake is also involved in the school newspaper The Ritan.
Jake said, “It’s an honor to receive the Mustang of the Month Award and to be recognized at St. Rita in the short time I have been here. I love it at St. Rita.”
Sophomore Michael Prado (St. Mary Star of the Sea): Michael continues to be involved in St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish as a CCD and religious special sacraments aide for the past two years. During his freshman year he enjoyed being a member of the St. Rita football team and this year is running track.
Michael was quoted as saying, “So far I’ve had a terrific time here at St. Rita. I could ask for a better environment to learn in. I look forward to what St. Rita has to offer me in the years to come.”
Junior Loren Lorenz (Central Junior High): Loren is an active member of Queen of Martyrs Parish. Every year he volunteers to help collect food for the Evergreen Park Food Drive and helps out at the Evergreen Park Car Show. Loren has kept busy while at St. Rita as a water polo and swim team member. He also enjoys belonging to the Paintball Club.
Loren said, “St. Rita has been my second home. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next year and a half.”
Senior Kevin Yerkes (Lenart): Kevin is a member of Queen of the Universe Parish. Kevin has been very involved in athletics during his four years at St. Rita. He was a member of the basketball team his freshman year and has been on the football and volleyball teams all four years. Kevin also holds a 4.63 GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society, and was named an Illinois State Scholar. According to his teachers, Kevin represents the values that are looked for in a Rita Man and it is a privilege to have him in class. He plans to attend either the University of Illinois, Urbana – Champaign or Purdue University in the fall.
Kevin says about his time at St. Rita, “St. Rita has been like a second home for me these past four years. It was a great decision to come here.”
The Mustangs of the Month Awards were presented at an all-school mass on January 8th. Each student was presented with a personally engraved Mustang statue.
