St. Rita High School remembers and honors the ultimate sacrifice that 2nd Lt. Stephen Biezis made for us.
Two days shy of Christmas in 1944, two Chicago airmen plummeted from the sky.
One went down over Germany, the other over Belgium. And for more than a half-century, both were unaccounted for.
It's unclear if Stephen V. Biezis and Ward C. Swalwell Jr. knew each other. But they are connected by their hometown and their shared fate during World War II.
As their families kept hoping for answers, the world moved on. The war ended. Life blossomed over the wreckage.
More than 70 years later, their remains were recovered and identified through relatives' DNA.
Now the men are linked again.
