Ritamen Mike Gapski '76 (the Chicago Blackhawks' Head Athletic Trainer) and Rob Kennedy '91 (the Tampa Bay Lightning's Assistant Equipment Manager) recently took time to exchange memories of St. Rita High School as both their organizations compete in the 2015 NHL Stanley Cup Finals!
Mike graduated from St. Rita Grammar School and St. Rita High School. Mike was also inducted into the St. Rita High School Hall of Fame this past April. While at St. Rita, Mike played both trumpet and tuba in the band. He earned his degree in physical education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. There he served as both Assistant Athletic Trainer (1982-1985) and Head Athletic Trainer (1985-1987). In 1987 Mike fulfilled a lifelong dream by becoming the Head Athletic Trainer for the Chicago Blackhawks. In his time with the Blackhawks, Mike has been an integral part of two Stanley Cup winning teams (2010 and 2013) while working over 2,000 NHL games.
Rob graduated from St. Rita High School in 1991. He played for the St. Rita Skating Mustangs Hockey Team and also played flute and marching french horn in the band. According to theTampa Bay Lightning website, Rob is in his sixth year with the Lightning. Prior to that he was with the Florida Panthers and spent two years with the AHL's Cleveland Barons. He was also a member of the equipment staff for the 2012 NHL All-Star Game in Ottawa.
