Music, Comedy Launch Variety Show to Success

Recently, the St. Rita of Cascia Theater Group put on their annual Variety Show to resounding acclaim.  Directed by Mr. Matthew Enright and Miss Lauren Condon, the Variety Show was an open event that showcased the musical, recitative, and improvisational skills of the dedicated members of the Theater Group.

The show started off with class as Mr. Tim Baffoe turned the auditorium into a ‘60s cocktail lounge with his re-imagining of late crooner Frank Sinatra’s trademark swagger, belting out a Christmas tune to warm up the audience.  Other musical performances included the Ramones’ hit "I Want to Be Sedated”, as interpreted by Gus Esterhammer-Fic ‘09, Pat Leonard ‘10 and Matt McGeever ‘09, as well as a spirited rendition of Guns ‘N’ Roses killer “Sweet Child of Mine”, pounded out by Dan Schergen ‘10, Pat Leonard ‘10 and Matt McGeever ‘09.  There were only minimal charges for damage to the green room.  Beau Koleno ‘11 also contributed a guitar montage, and Baffoe returned to the stage to add some further holiday cheer singing a duet with Miss Lauren Condon on “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”  There was hardly a dry eye in the house.

Aside from music, the other main element of the show was comedy.  Dan Moore ‘09 and Kyel White ‘09 transformed themselves into Abbot and Costello to perform an intensely funny version of the classic skit “Who’s on First.”  Then Jack Howard channeled SNL alum Will Farrell in the popular Christopher Walken / Blue Oyster Cult skit “More Cowbell.”  The audience happily took the advice to not fear the laughter.  Finally, an original comedy sketch entitled “Spelling Bee,” penned by Dan Moore, saw the ensemble cast tossing up their best impersonations of faculty members such as Wrestling Coach Mr. Dan Carroll and fellow performer Mr. Michael Allocca.  The impersonations were dead-on, and Moore’s pithy dialogue was received with belly-aching laughter to close out the night.

The Theater Group can be proud of a well-conceived and well-executed night of entertainment, and even more so for the fact that one-half of the night’s proceeds went to benefit the Angel’s
