4 Students Chosen for the Andrew Smialek Scholarship

Andrew Smialek, a 2008 graduate of St. Rita, lost his battle with cancer on November 20, 2009. The St. Mary Star of the Sea alum was a warm, loving person, and one that his classmates and teachers enjoyed being around. In memory of “Andy” the Andrew Smialek Scholarship was established for current St. Rita students. Each student that applies for the scholarship writes an essay about why they choose to attend to St. Rita High School. The winner from each class receives a $1000 tuition grant.

The money is raised by friends and family of Andrew by hosting a walk-a-thon in his honor as well as selling raffle tickets. On January 3rd at the St. Rita Novena, four winners were announced. Senior Billy Doyle Jr., Junior Pat Mitchell, Sophmore Mike Cudzik, and Freshman Mike Smith.

“Each of these students exemplify what St. Rita is about, but more importantly what Andy was about,” Fr. Tom McCarthy stated. “Andy was a great person and he would be honored to have these four students represent him.”
