2014SmialekWinnersAndrew Smialek, a 2008 graduate of St. Rita, lost his battle with cancer on November 20, 2009. The St. Mary Star of the Sea alum was a warm, loving person, and one that his classmates and teachers enjoyed being around. In memory of “Andy” the Andrew Smialek Scholarship was established for current St. Rita students. Each student that applies for the scholarship writes an essay about how they can live their life like Andrew did. The winner from each class receives a $1000 tuition grant.

The money is raised by friends and family of Andrew by hosting a walk-a-thon in his honor as well as selling raffle tickets. On January 2nd at the St. Rita Novena at the St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel, five winners were announced. Senior Christopher O'Neill Jr., Junior Tom Schofield, Sophmore Tony Munzing, and Freshmen Terry Glynn and Tim Zaleski.

“Each of these students exemplify what St. Rita is about, but more importantly what Andy was about,” Fr. Tom McCarthy stated. “Andy was a great person and he would be honored to have these four students represent him.”
