That's when sophomore Daniel Gleaves broke through the middle of Simeon's punt protection, blocked the kick and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown. The play gave St. Rita a seven-point halftime lead and the Mustangs cruised to a 35-20 victory at Soldier Field.
Senior quarterback Tommy Mister completed 4 of 10 pass attempts for 111 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He added 10 carries for 44 yards with another touchdown to pace the Mustangs (12-2), who hadn't won 12 games in a season since the 2006
state Class 7A championship year.
Gleaves' blocked punt closed the first half, and Mister opened the second half with a 56-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Gaston. St. Rita led the rest of the game and finished
the season undefeated against teams not named Mount Carmel.
"Our coaches did a great job at halftime switching things up and getting the passing game going," Mister said. "Sometimes we come out slow … and we just come out on fire after halftime."
