St. Rita of Cascia Stock Market Club takes 2nd Place in the Fall 2011 Chicago Stock Market Competition

Recently, the St. Rita Stock Market Club won second place in the Chicago Fall 2011 Stock Market Game™.   A total of 94 teams competed in the competition which ran from mid-September 2011 through December 9, 2011.  The St. Rita Stock Market Club members of the winning team are:  Victor Luna (Chicago, St. Albert the Great), Peter Cozzi (Westmont, Cass JHS), Jack Pienta (Chicago Beverly, St. Cajetan), Quentin Gray (South Holland, St. Ailbe), Rich Houlihan (Oak Lawn, St. Catherine of Alexandria), and Erik Landstrom (Oak Lawn, St. Catherine of Alexandria).

Through computer simulation, each team “invests” $100,000 in publicly traded companies or mutual funds.  The St. Rita team finished with $114,547 – a 14.5% return - during this period.  This equals an approximate annual return of 58%.  The team’s top performing stock was Walt Disney Corporation, which owns ESPN, Disney Theme Parks and the Disney Channel.

The Stock Club, along with moderator Mike Gallagher, holds meetings where they discuss investing basics from several investors including Peter Lynch of The Fidelity Magellan Mutual Fund and Warren Buffet of Berkshire Hathaway. Some of the basic concepts include: spend less than you make; invest in the stock market through your employer’s 401(k) plan; understand each investment you make; buy great businesses’ stock at a fair price and hold them for the long-term and, finally, try to keep investing costs low.

The team will be recognized for their outstanding achievement at an award reception held at the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) on January 11.
