Caddies throughout mostly the Midwest can apply for the Chick Evans Scholarship from the Evans Scholars Foundation of the Western Golf Association. In order to apply, they need a recommendation from the caddie master at their respective country club where they caddy. Applicants must also show a certain level of financial need, and they must have a strong academic record and distinct leadership qualities.
Applicants have an initial interview with the Chick Evans committee. From there only 280 caddies are chosen for the scholarship. Students give a list of four schools they would like to attend in order of preference and the committee makes the final determination on where they send the winners. Gikas and the DeCesare brothers all chose The University of Illinois as their top school.
