Each year during the week of Veterans Day, St. Rita celebrates the dedication of all those who have served our country in the military, especially our very own alumni. As part of our recognition of our veterans this week, St. Rita welcomed back 2009 alumnus Dan McLaughlin on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 to share his experiences in the military with the St. Rita High School student body.
While at St. Rita, McLaughlin was a player on the football and volleyball teams. He also was a member of the chess team and the racquetball club. After graduating from St. Rita, he attended Moraine Valley before deciding to join the Marines in October, 2011. After two deployments overseas, McLaughlin was stationed with the 1st battalion 5th Marines Infantry Unit in California. He was honorably discharged in October 2015. McLaughlin is currently pursuing a Criminal Justice degree at St. Xavier University where he is also President of the St. Xavier's Student Veteran Alliance.
As St. Rita continues to celebrate Veteran’s Day this week and honor all those who have served our country in the military, the Freshman Student Government Representatives are kicking off a Christmas Care Package Project. They will be working to identify St. Rita alumni who are currently serving in the Armed Forces around the world. The students plan to put together special Christmas care packages including notes of support to be sent to those alumni. On behalf of the entire St. Rita Community, they thank all of our alumni who are serving our country. It is the Freshman Student Government’s hope that these alumni will then send back a card or video message to be shared with the student body.
To help fund this project, the Freshman Student Government will be sponsoring a Spirit Day on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11th where all proceeds will go to benefit the care packages. Any remaining funds will be donated to a veterans organization.
