St. Rita Alumni Lead Effort for Kennedy Park Scoreboard and Papa Hops Softball Tourney

Honorary St. Rita High School Alumnus Tom "Papa Hops" Hopkins will be remembered at the 2nd Annual Papa Hops Softball Tournament at Kennedy Park on Friday, July 17, 2015. A brand-new Kennedy Park Scoreboard will be unveiled just before the start of the 10:00 p.m. championship game.

The Tom Hopkins Memorial Fund is a 501(c)(3) fund that was established in the summer of 2014 following Tom’s early passing from cancer. Tom “Papa Hops” Hopkins truly loved life, living each day to the fullest, always inspiring his family and friends to do the same. Tom was a proud supporter of youth athletics and a determined fighter of cancer. The Tom Hopkins Memorial Fund strives to keep Papa Hops’ dream alive by providing support to local youth athletes, assisting local families in need and supporting doctors and other organizations in efforts to raise awareness and conquer the fight against melanoma.

The tournament started last year as a way to remember Hopkins, who died from cancer, and raise money for charities. This year's tournament has already raised more than $16,000 and there are 28 teams signed up, topping last year's total of nearly $10,000 and 18 teams, said Liam Hopkins '11, Tom Hopkins' son and one of the event's organizers.

The St. Rita High School Registrar and Tom's widow, Margie Hopkins, and Margie's and Tom's other two sons, Tommy '07 and Martin '09 have also been very busy planning the tourney.

Helping the Hopkins family are St. Rita High School Sophomore Basketball Coach Pat Connolly and St. Rita Alums Josh Blaszak '02, Dave Amraen '07 and Mike Haas '11.
