The varsity baseball team took their annual trip to South Carolina to participate in the 44th annual H.I.T. Tournament in Charleston. After a 14-hour bus ride the Mustangs played Pinewood, SC and took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th before allowing 3 runs to lose their first game of the season after 10 straight wins. On day two, St. Rita took on the defending South Carolina state champs, Ashley Ridge, on their home field. Behind the pitching of junior ace Mike Costanzo (6 IP, 1 ER, 8 Ks) and the hitting of senior Andrew Massey (3-3, 4 RBIs), the Mustangs prevailed 10-1.
Day 3 of the trip the Mustangs took on defending Virginia state runner-up Kellam from Virginia Beach. In a hard-fought contest, the Mustangs lost 4-2 despite a strong pitching performance from senior Dom Fosco and good day at the plate by junior Nick Goldsmith (2-3, 2 2Bs, RBI).
Day 4 of the trip had St. Rita ready to play South Carolina catholic power Bishop England, but rain forced the game to be cancelled and allowed the Mustangs to get an early start home.
St. Rita now opens catholic league play with an overall record of (12-2) ranked 3rd in the Southtown and 6th in the Chicago Sun Times.
