Twenty-seven grammar school teams recently participated in the “It’s Academic” competition hosted at St. Rita High School. The scholastic competition is based on the old College Bowl format
and is designed to acknowledge grammar school students by recognizing their achievements in the classroom. Questions are from the following categories: Mathematics, English Composition and Literature, Social Studies, Science and Current Events/Geography.
The competition is divided into three rounds. In Rounds I and II, each team had the opportunity to answer up to 10 questions in 90 seconds. In those rounds, only the team whose turn it was could answer. In Round III there were ten questions for either
team to answer. Team members “buzzed in” to answer those questions. If they failed to answer the question, the other team may have elected to answer. There were no penalties for incorrect answers—just lost opportunities to score points.
Trophies and medals were awarded to the First Place team from St. Christina School in Mt. Greenwood – Joe Durnell, James Loughney, John Julkowski, Ryan Marquardt and Ryan Kaczynski. Second Place was won by one of the teams from St. Michael School in Orland Park – Adam Harrington, Chris Kitchin, Brady Mack, Dennis McCarthy, Josh Nolan, Ben Cachares, Dylan Violetto and Tom Bernecker. Third Place winners were from the team members from St. John Fisher School in Beverly – Nate Finn, Sean Bird, Qui Do, Pat Smith, Connor Scott, Ryan Caulfield, Liam Kelly and Brett Folliard.
Each year that St. Rita has sponsored “It’s Academic,” some of the best and brightest students from the Chicagoland area have participated in this very spirited competition. Each student who participated received a St. Rita backpack.
