St. Rita is moving on in the Kennedy Cup Playoffs

“St. Rita is moving on in the Kennedy Cup playoffs” is something the Mustang contingent has heard over and over for the past decade. Those words rang out once again last night in Johnny’s Ice House as St. Rita beat the over matched St. Ignatius team 4-1 to win the quarterfinal series 2-0. While St. Rita played with the lead the entire game and undoubtedly were in control for three periods it was a penalty filled game. St. Ignatius seemed to be playing with a chip on their shoulder gathering 16 penalties in the game to St. Rita’s 9.

St. Rita’s Tony Faron (So., Martino JH) scored two goals on the night, which both came on the power play. Also pitching in for the Mustangs were Dylan Kay (Jr., St. Catherine) & Chris Foley (Sr., Homer JH) who both scored a goal apiece.

While this is just the first step for St. Rita on their way to a 6th consecutive Kennedy Cup, Head Coach Craig Ferguson realizes how important it is to get out of the first series unscathed. "We are thrilled to be moving on to the semi-finals. It was important that we were able to finish this series in two games with no injuries. We will be able to rest for at least a week now.”

The long layoff is due to the other quarterfinal match not yet starting. St. Rita will take on the winner of St. Viator/Benet which has their first two games of their series scheduled for this upcoming Monday and Tuesday. As a result the semi-final round may not begin until Thursday, February 21st.
