Mr. Gary DeCesare
Varsity Head Coach                                                                                
Head Coach Gary DeCesare has led the Mustangs to four consecutive Catholic League Championships and the back-to-back regional championships.

Coach DeCesare brings the Mustangs a wealth of experience at both the collegiate and high school levels. He served as Associate Head Coach at DePaul University for four years as well as three seasons as the Assistant Basketball Coach at the University of Richmond.

Prior to coaching at the collegiate level, Coach DeCesare spent 16 seasons as the Head Varsity Basketball Coach at St. Raymond's High School in the Bronx. He led St. Raymond's to two New York State Championships and four City Championships while being named the New York City and State Coach of the year four times. The Ravens were regularly a top-25 team in the country and traveled to tournaments across the country.  

Coach DeCesare has produced over 40 Division 1 players, including three McDonald’s High School All-Americans. In addition, he has been a Director for the prestigious ABCD Basketball Camp.

Coach DeCesare resides in Western Springs with his wife, Pam, two sons, Gary and TJ, and daughter, Amanda.

Mr. Kenton Terrell
Associate Varsity Head Coach

Coach Terrell begins his fifth season at St. Rita after six successful seasons as an Assistant Varsity Coach at Leo Catholic High School.  During his tenure, the Lions compiled an impressive record of 131 wins and 50 losses, which included four Regional Championships, a Sectional Championship, a Super Sectional Championship, and a 4th place finish in the 2008-2009 IHSA State Finals.

He was a three year Letterman and starting point guard for the St. Rita Running Mustangs from 1981-1983.  Highlights include: Captain 1982, 1983; Regional Champion 1982; All-Catholic 1982, 1983; All-Area 1983; Most Valuable Player 1983; Rockford Boylan Tournament MVP 1983; Varsity Record: 50-27.

Coach Terrell received an athletic scholarship to the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he played one season for the Kangaroos before returning home to Chicago State University.  He was a three year Letterman for the Cougars from 1985-1988.  Highlights include: Captain 1987, 1988; Most Valuable Player 1988; All-Academic Honors 1988. Collegiate Record: 67-56.

Coach Terrell and his wife Roslyn reside inChicagoand have three children: Kaitlin; Kendall; and Kenton II.

Sophomore Team

Mr. Roshawn Russell '08
Sophomore Head Coach

Roshawn Russell comes from Fontbonne University where he was the assistant men’s basketball coach after serving two years as a graduate assistant. Prior to that, Coach Russell enjoyed a very successful career on the hardwood. He finished his career with the Vikings ranked number one on the all-time free throw shooting charts both for his career and for a single season. Russell shot a career-best 88 percent from the line over his career and shot a record 90 percent during his freshman year. He also ranks tenth all-time in total assists at North Park and scored 939 points over his four-year playing career. Russell is ranked 7th all-time at North Park for career three-point field goals made with 117 and ranks 8th all-time in career three-point percentage with 38.5%. Russell graduated from North Park University in the spring of 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education.

Coach Russell attended St. Rita where he enjoyed a stellar prep career. He was a four-year starter for the basketball team and earned All-Chicago Catholic League Second Team honors as a junior and First Team as a senior as well as All-Area honors for the Southtown Star. He was voted the team MVP his senior year and earned All-Tournament honors at the McGovern Classic. He averaged 18.7 points, 4.1 assists and 2.1 steals in leading the team to an 18-11 record his senior year Russell also played in the Catholic League All-Star Game in the Spring of 2008.
