Ritamen Explore Ireland's Rich History, Faith, and Augustinian Heritage

55 St. Rita students and 9 chaperones traveled to Ireland for an unforgettable 9 day educational and faith-filled experience. Throughout the trip, our Ritamen explored Ireland's history, vibrant culture, and Gaelic language, even learning the traditional greeting, "Dia Dhuit," which means "Hello."

The journey held special significance for our St. Rita Family as students learned that the first Augustinians to arrive in the United States came from Ireland. This connection came to life during visits to St. Augustine's Church in Galway and St. Augustinian Church, John's Lane, in Dublin, where students reflected on the Augustinian heritage that continues to shape St. Rita today.

The group traveled throughout both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, experiencing many of the country's most historic landmarks. Highlights included a ferry ride to the Aran Islands to witness the majestic Cliffs of Moher, a visit to the Knock Basilica, and time exploring the colorful city of Galway. Students also enjoyed hands-on learning by herding sheep on an Irish farm and discovering the family history of mining while digging for silver and lead at the Glengowla Mines.

Our Ritamen explored Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery, home to Ireland's oldest and largest collection of Neolithic tombs, and toured the impressive Donegal Castle. In Northern Ireland, students visited Derry and Belfast, gaining a deeper understanding of the region's unique history through sites such as the Diamond War Memorial, while also recognizing locations made famous by the popular series Derry Girls.

Adventure was also part of the experience as students climbed the iconic Giant's Causeway and crossed the thrilling Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. The trip concluded with visits to Belfast's Ulster Folk Museum, the historic Shankill Road and Lower Falls murals, and a final day in Dublin. There they toured the beautiful St. Patrick's Cathedral before enjoying the city's lively atmosphere, complete with performances by local Irish musicians.

This trip provided our Ritamen with an opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences while strengthening their appreciation for Irish history, culture, and the Augustinian tradition. More importantly, it fostered lasting friendships, unforgettable memories, and a deeper understanding of the heritage that is an important part of our St. Rita Family.
